Tian An 1000 Trees | Shanghai, China

Conceived of as a tree-covered mountain, Heatherwick Studio’s 1000 Trees is a large scale, mixed-use development that manages to reconcile the requirement for a high density building while delivering a project that brings a much-needed human scale to the neighborhood. StudioSZ was engaged to produce an architectural video of the exterior architecture prior to the project’s phase one opening.

  • In capturing 1000 Trees in both architectural video and photography, StudioSZ set out to contextualize this unique mixed-use building within its canalside environment.

  • The major challenge for this photoshoot was that 1000 Trees had not yet opened, so we needed to rely on activity around the building animating the video and photographs. This project, in many ways, has breathed new life to this neighborhood and StudioSZ set out to capture that.

  • StudioSZ filmed Tian An 1000 Trees over several days which resulted in an architectural video that showcased the project in consistent weather / light. Using a combination of aerial drone footage, timelapse, and eye-level perspectives, the film provides glimpses of the project from above as well as more intimate views one gets from adjacent areas.
