Circle and Square | Hangzhou, China

Composed of 426 orange, mesh fabric ribbons, Circle and Square is a part of a series of public art installations designed by New York based Behin Ha and built in cities across the globe.  The project defines two unique outdoor spaces, capturing the attention of nearby pedestrians and inviting them in to engage and explore.

StudioSZ was commissioned by both Behin Ha and the art consultant, Vantaly, to photograph and film this artwork that sits prominently inside Hangzhou’s recently opened Chengbei MixC shopping development.

  • Given that this art installation is the latest in a series of similar projects, one requirement was that our photos needed to feel like they were consistent and part of a larger family of images that had been taken previously.  Additionally, we set out to really highlight how Circle and Square lures passersby in and engaged them to explore the art installation and the space it defines.

  • We faced a few critical challenges when shooting this large scale art installation.  Shooting the project in the winter meant that there would be far fewer people moving through the site, but we were patient and waiting for passersby to come and engage with the artwork so we could capture those moments.  Additionally, the installation is attached to the northern facade of the building, which meant we needed to focus our time on shooting the project early in the morning and late in the afternoon when the lower angle sunlight spilled through.

  • We came away from our shoot in Hangzhou with a beautiful set of photos that captured the project at all scales.  Together with the short film we created, Behin Ha’s vision for Circle and Square comes across cohesively for the viewer.
